What The Hell Am I Going To Do With These Lyrics?

        A while ago there was a contest for covers of Taeyang's  "Eye's,Nose,Lips"  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UwuAPyOImoI.   So, I went ahead and wrote some lyrics to it. That is not exactly easy to do, since everything has to match and flow with lyrics written in another language.   So, after much brainstorming and starting to write the lyrics, I did something I think is kinda smart.  I made a worksheet to help keep things organized.

          Afterwards I couldn't really think of what to do with them.  I am not a singer, nor do I really have any you tube video making capabilities.  However, I do have an old schoolmate that has a You Tube channel and is a puppeteer.  So, maybe she might be interested in making a cover video using puppets.  However, to properly pitch this idea I need to make sure that I come across as more than just a whimsical artist with a random idea.  So I decided to do an Ad Comp to pitch the idea to her.  

   

        The success possibility of this idea is really low.  I have not really talked to the old schoolmate in years, and I have no idea how she will move the idea.  However, it can not hurt to try and maybe get some use out of these lyrics.

The Storyboard Animatic Project of Learning Concluded

    The CD's of my animatic are now mailed off.  Which means that the project is finally finished!!

    Needless to say the enthusiasm for this project died out long ago.  I would be very surprised if I hear anything back about it, given how old the joke is and that the animatic comes across as rushed and amateurish.

      On the positive side,  I don't know of any people that would put this much effort into this kind of idea. Also, how many people decided to teach themselves how to make a storyboard animatic like I did?  

 But I finished it and it is done!  On to other things!

The Storyboard Animatic Project of Learning pt.24

           The Storyboard Animatic Project of Learning is finally completed!!!   I barely finished it  before the 2 year mark but I have still finished it.  Now all that is left is to mail it out.  Watch it below.

The Crititque

         - A lot of the shots come across as well done and planned.  They work.

         - The overall idea for the project is successful.  It definitely comes across as a good mix of Legend of Korra and Gangam Style.

         -  Characters are readable and everything comes across like it should.

         - The drawings near the end are better than I thought they would.

         - The project took A LOT longer then it should have.

         - The boards are very messy and smudged.  This really hurts how professional the project appears.

            *Storing these boards in a box was a HORRIBLE idea.  I had access to a scanner and I should have scanned them right away!  What was I thinking!

        - There are a lot of drawing errors as well.

        - The final bit dance seen comes across as rushed because I didn't animate the background to go along with the figures moving.

         - The project definitely comes across as more amateurish than something done by a professional that knows what he is doing.

         - I GODDAMN FUCKING FINISHED THE BLOODY THING!!!!  Despite moving three times, struggling to afford to eat, spending a quarter to finish my degree,  living with an Aunt and Uncle that I eventually had to hide drawing from, and at one point having 32 hour work days,  I somehow managed to finish the damn thing and get it posted up on the internet!  That is THE MOST IMPORTANT thing out of all of it.  Especially, given the difficulties that I was mentioning above.

          -  Now I really don't have an excuse for some of the projects I have been thinking about. If I was able to finish this one, I can finish other projects.

The Storyboard Animatic Project of Learning pt.23

I  am finally on the last leg of getting the animatic finished.  However I am no longer at SCAD, and only have access to my computer.

   No more beautiful two computer workspaces.

         Somehow,  either through a deal SCAD that lasts longer than when I finished, or by sown miracle of GOD,  I am able to use After Effects for free.  Since I don't have a computer just for visual reference, I have devised a way to use the snippet tool to create my reference images.

            I used these images that I took from key moments that I want to animate and used them as the points of reference.

       This is basically how I was doing things with two computers only not as specific. That is just a price I am going to have to pay however, if I want to keep this project under the 2 year mark.

The Storyboard Animatic Project of Learning pt.22

            I am at the point where I am drawing this scene.

             To do this scene properly and like I planned I need to have a specific character referenced for each person in the scene.  Not necessarily easy, but I believe it will be that much better.  So I created a diagram in Photoshop to help me keep track and know what I am doing.

The names are also the titles of the images used for reference to make things easier

            Originally I thought there were 2 people in the first row but upon further inspection I realized that there were more like two rows of 2 people.  This means thatI will have to find more characters.
(Show image with shadows circled.).  I also need to make sure I draw this small.  While doing the After Effects work earlier, I realized that I was making things too big and I was starting to have trouble fitting them into the frames.  So it is a good thing I did that, or I would have a lot more errors to correct later on in the project.

A Note on Scrap Paper

     One of the ways I have been saving money is by using the hell out of things I have drawn on before.  For instance,

This was originally an assignment on drawing hands, for one of my final classes.  I then used it to practice drawing faces, followed by composition ideas for the Joss Whedon drawing.  None of these are any images that I care about after I have finished drawing them, and as long as I can see the idea for a composition I am fine.  This piece of paper has since been thrown away, so it is not like anybody else is going to try and figure out what is on it.

        I do this for 2 reasons:
                   1. To save money on scrap paper.  I do not have the tools for digital media, and even if I did, I would still do this for sketching and practice.  If I didn't do things this way, I would have had to buy reams of computer paper by now, and I can;t afford that.
                    2.  To get rid of things and save space.  I have a lot of old artwork lying around,and it is taking up a lot of space.  I need to get rid of these things, especially since I live in a room at a relative's place, and space is very limited for me. This way I have to use the things I have been storing and get rid of them.  Thus eventually freeing up space.  I have digital scans of all the important work, plus I need to redo my portfolio anyway so people aren't really going to be seeing what I currently have.  Some things I can use as christmas and birthday gifts, but that doesn't really get rid of much.

The Attempt on Joss Whedon's Fan Mail pt.2

While I am waiting for an opportunity to download adobe After Effects, I have been working on the image I plan on sending to Joss Whedon. So as usual I did some sketches to practice Joss Whedon's face, and try a new idea for the composition.

     Since this is to JOSS WHEDON, and he is a director that uses storyboard artists (I hope),  I decided to work on my compositions more and did thumbnails.

       I like the one on the top left the best.  Bottom right is to intense, and this is still just a fun idea to give to somebody.  The bottom right defeats the whole purpose because you cannot even see if it is Joss Whedon, which is the whole point.  Of course form there I went to the tight rough.  

        When blowing this up to 11X17 size I realized something.

I had used the wrong format for the tight rough.  The tight rough template I used was for a side project that is suppose to be 8.5 x 11 size.  The solution to this is quite simple though.  I just trim both the working image and the final image when I send them to him.  Hopefully this will be one that gets sent a lot quicker, since it doesn't involve international shipping charges.

Let's Send More Fan Art!

    Someday I would like to live in South Korea and still be able to work as a storyboard artist.  I also enjoy music videos, and Kpop.  To be able to do that someday requires connections and knowledge of the industry.  In that case the fan art idea is a good way to try find some information really quickly, like who is in charge of the ideas for the music videos, are storyboards used, etc.  Therefore this fan art thing is going to be a continuing project.  In fact, it is really no different than what I am doing with the Joss Whedon networking attempt, but for South Korea Kpop.

       To start off with I am choosing artist I really like, because it is easier for me to come up with an idea that could connect with them.  For a project like this,  having something that connects with them means they will like it a lot more and be more eager to respond.   Otherwise it will just be another random piece of fan mail.  So, when it comes time to send stuff to artist that I don't follow often, I will have to do a lot of research on them.

       An example is the drawing that I am going to send to Ailee.

and of course this image apparently still needs to be cleaned up more.

        I have followed Ailee's career a little so I had a little bit of an idea of what to add. First off being that she is known for having a very powerful voice.  So my first idea is to show her voice being very powerful.  I then added things relating to her videos, and pet pomeranion,  to make the image seem more impressive.  Basically it is the idea of easter eggs in video games.  Like the others this is still a quicker image that I did the final pencil and inking for in a few hours.  Basically something that can be worked on at the end of the day, or with a couple of free hours.  Now I just need to package it up, and have it wait to be shipped along with the drawings for Miryo and Narsha.

 The critque:

        -  The composition is okay.  It would look better if I put a background on there and added some random things, but that would take a lot more time.  The perspective is solid and everything is readable.  Also the line work looks better than the other ones I did.  That is because I used pencil blue line for the line work and pen blue line for the perspective grid.  Best idea yet!

        -  I used a Zebra brush pen for the first time on this.  I like the fact that there is less jitter with my strokes, but there is not much flexibility with the line width.  

Let's Send Fan Art!

      A long time ago before this post, two members of my favorite Kpop group formed a sub unit called M&N.  These two artists happen to be Miryo and Narsha.  Needless to say, the fan girl in me squealed to very high lengths.  Even better, was when I found out that they had released an English remix of their song.   This made me very happy.  So I decided to send them a drawing as a way of saying thank you, and try to turn it into an attempt to found out information about making Music Videos in South Korea.

So first off I did some practice drawings and sketched out some ideas.

Afterwards I did a "working version" then I scanned and printed off a final version.  In the end I decided to send both versions to them since I would just wind up throwing it away to save space.

 I wrote letters, explaining the images, and asking questions that hopefully they will answer.

Then they got wrapped up and ready to be shipped.  Pretty much in the same way I did the Korra fan art that I sent, to Mike, Bryan, and Bill Rinaldi. So now it is just sitting under my bed waiting until the day that I can afford international shipping charges.

I had to wrap the images in old pillow cases because I had run out of newsprint.

The Critique:

- The idea is to create a cute image that will stand out form all the fan mail the artist already get and makr them want to answer the questions that I asked them.  In which case, I believe that it has the potential. to be successful.

- Artwork:  

            - In one of the images, it looks like I broke on e of the chibi's neck. Even with these being completely unrealistic, that will still look off.  However, I do believe I managed to get a likeness for each artist so that when they see it, they will know who each chibi is supposed to be,

            -  My attempt at hand lettering these was horrible.  It seems that I still haven't learned my lesson about that.

            -  My biggest issue is with the line work.  It is scratchy, and just looks bad.  That is actually because of a tool issue, 

                      These are non-photo blue pens, and boy do I love them!  I started using them while working on assignments while finishing up my degree. I love the fact that they don't erase, because I would always lose all of my structure line when trying to fish an image.  However the also indent the paper, and this causes a big issue with inking over top of them.  They are the reason that my final line art looks so bad.  Therefore they are now delegated to perspective grids and sketching.

                 - Overall I am not entirely dissatisfied with the outcome of this project, except for the inevitable long wait for shipping it.  These are meant to be quick drawings, that are still cute and well-done.  Despite the issues, I can easily live with how these turned out.  Will they reach them? Probably.  Bill Rinaldi got his artwork form and he even posted it on his tumbler page.
